Beautiful lowland rainforest, wild rivers, the North Johnston River gorge
and waterfalls make the Palmerston Section of Wooroonooran National Park one of
the most scenic places in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. Both lowland and
upland rainforests can be seen in the Palmerston Section.
Rainforest reaches its greatest diversity here in this high rainfall area. More
than 500 rainforest trees occur here, including blackbean, milky pine, water gum
and red tulip oak. Many wildlife live in this part of the park, including the
tiny musky rat-kangaroo, double-eyed fig-parrot and chowchilla.
The Wari and Dulgubara people who lived in and near the Palmerston area have a
special connection to this place. In 1882, explorer and bushman Christie
Palmerston walked from Innisfail to Herberton with Aboriginal guides in 12 days,
an incredible feat in those days. The highway follows the route he took and the
park section and highway are named in his memory.
MA MU Rainforest Canopy Walk on the Palmerston Highway is
midway between Innisfail and Millaa Millaa - 30 kilometres from each centre.
It is situated on the eastern edge of the World Heritage Area near Crawfords
Lookout. The walk offers spectacular views across the North Johnston River
valley and the rare opportunity to walk through the tree tops and observe the
numerous birds, fruits and flowers in the rainforest canopy. The tower at the

Crawford's Lookout to North Johnson Lookout - (4 km: 2-3 hours).
From Crawford's Lookout the track winds down into the North Johnstone River
Gorge, dropping some 500m in the 1.5 km walk.
K tree to Tchupala Falls ( 1.2 km: 1
hour)
From the K Tree entrance on the Palmerston Highway to Tchupala Falls is only
about 600 metres.
K tree to Goolagan's picnic area - (3 km: 1-2 hours).
This track leads fist to Wallicher Falls which, though relatively small, are
spectacular. Access to the bottom of the falls can be gained alter crossing
Henrietta Creek The track then climbs a little before following the contours
above Henrietta Creek through some very tall and dense-canopied rainforest. The
1.7 km return to K-Tree via the highway takes approximately 45 minutes.
Coolagan's picnic area to Henrietta Creek camping area. - (800m: 30 min).
This short track follows Henrietta Creek. linking the picnic and camping areas.
Camp in the rainforest at Henrietta Creek. Tent and caravan sites, toilets, a
shelter shed and picnic tables are provided. This is an excellent
track from which to view wildlife. such as the musky rat-kangaroo. and platypus
and tortoises in the creek. The return via the highway. takes approximately 15
minutes.
Nandroya Falls circuit - (2.5 km: 1-1.5 hours).
From the camping area the track :limbs the ridge that separates Henrietta and
Douglas creeks. It then winds slowly down towards Nandroya Falls (50m) via
Silver Creek Falls (10m). Return either along the main Nandroya Falls track or
via the circuit track, 3.5 km (2-3 hours). This circuit track initially follows
Douglas Creek passing some excellent swimming holes. It then skins a steep
hillside before rejoining the main track 1 km from the camping area.
